DWARF PLANETS: A BIG HIT THIS YEAR




Pluto's photo shoot begins January 25th as NASA's New Horizons spacecraft heads towards a close approach on July 14.

The instruments will also reveal Charon's surface data and map both of their make-ups and atmosphere but this will not conclude the mission for New Horizons:

Ceres will actually get the honors of first close ups as DAWN is expected to reach close approach to the dwarf planet/asteroid this March:

Officially named to date are 5 dwarf planets within our solar system.  They are: Pluto, Eris, Haumea, Makemake, and Ceres.
