Are GM Mosquitoes The Solution Or The Problem?

This is just one of the questions we are now faced with in the wake of this latest wave of the Zika virus outbreak in Columbia and Brazil after GM mosquitoes, whose scientific name is OX513-A, or 'Friendly Aedes Aegypti,'  were released in Juazeiro this past summer, as touted by Oxitec,  exactly where the recent outbreak of the Zika virus is most prevalent,. They were also released in China in 2015, Brazil and Panama in 2014, and in the Cayman Islands and Malaysia in 2010.  The GM mosquito experiment in Brazil has been ongoing since 2011, however they were first introduced into society in 2009 in the Cayman Islands, in part, thanks to a generous $5 million donation by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Zika Virus and Guillain Barre Syndrome Update

While it has not been confirmed, researchers are looking into a possible connection between the Zika virus and Guillain-Barre Syndrome due to a notable increase in cases of GBS associated with the recent influx in incidences of the Zika virus in Brazil.

Well: What Do You Know? Part 11: GMOs- Changes In Food For Thought

There once was a time when there was no such thing as GMOs, however these days GMO's have found their way into just about everything and now we call the stuff we used to eat 'organic' and pay more for them, not the designer stuff.  Doesn't that just seem a little backwards?  After all, big pharma tells us the cost of prescriptions are driven by their development.  Wouldn't it seem to stand to reason that all the development that has went into GMOs would have made them also more of a costly commodity?  One we would have to pay more for to enjoy the luxury of it's many benefits?  But that is not what we find in the case of GMOs.  Now that's some food for thought.

What's more is that while GM foods may seem cheaper at the checkout line, if you are or become ill and repeatedly end up in the Dr's office trying to troubleshoot what ails you with a crapshoot of pharmaceuticals, possibly even having to add more medications to combat the side effects of another, those foods might not be all that cheap after all.

Take soy for example which is in what seems like just about everything in one form or another, even in products like baby formula and Ensure- products so many people turn to for the nutritional needs of their infants and the elderly, thinking that these products are safe, thinking no company would (be allowed to) continue to put harmful ingredients into a product once the dangers are known.  Well, yet again, it is time to rethink that.

Well: What Do You Know? Part 10: Balanced Nutrition- The Other Big Deficit

Maintaining our health through good nutrition is becoming more and more challenging.

The modifications being made to foods found in today's marketplace are also altering their nutritional composition making it increasingly difficult to replace what is lost due to, among other things, the poor food choices we continue to make, either by availability, cost, or ignorance, resulting in a daily compounded nutritional deficit.

In the case of our bodies, nutrients are like a form of currency that helps to keep our bodies balanced, strong and healthy.  While pouring more money into government may never balance the budgets, increasing our uptake in nutrition may help balance our bodies.  In both cases, the answer is likely in how far we (have) push(ed) them and in what measures we (are willing to) take to correct the problems going forward.

Sometimes it can be difficult juggling priorities.

In part 9, Dr. Blaylock discusses some interesting findings from studies on the observed effects of nutrition on behaviour within various populations including inmates.

Well: What Do You Know? Part 8: Cholesterol and Your Brain on Statins

A variety of natural statins are produced from Penicillium and Aspergillus fungi which are mycotoxins.

25% of your body's cholesterol is found in the brain and is important to healthy brain function.

Statin drugs, prescribed to control cholesterol, are connected with several serious adverse side effects:

Well: What Do You Know? Part 7: Fluoride

Does the water you drink have fluoride in it?

How about the schools your children attend or your places of employment?

Even if your answer is no, most everyone is still exposed to it via many other methods such as the food chain and the water cycle that carries the particles up into the atmosphere where they collect and travel until they precipitate back to the ground.  That may not seem like any big deal on the surface, but a deeper look tells of the accumulative effects fluoride can have.

There are still many who don't even realize there is cause for concern, believing that dentists wouldn't recommend it, products wouldn't contain it, and municipalities would not add it, but a simple look on a tube of fluoride toothpaste will reveal a warning from poison control, and those most likely to eat toothpaste are also those who are already most at risk.

When one begins to consider the various sources and types of exposure they really are subjected to on a daily basis and how various combinations of these substances can alter their effects on living things, once more on their own, it becomes clear that things aren't always quite as straightforward as they seem.

Did you know:

  • Just one glass of fluoridated water meets the daily allowance of what is considered safe.
  • The amount of toothpaste shown on a toothbrush in commercials is equivalent to what is considered safe for use over an entire month- not a single brushing.
