It frequently appears days or weeks after a respiratory or digestive tract infection.
- Most commonly, infection with campylobacter, a type of bacteria often found in under cooked poultry, is thought to be a trigger.
Poultry should have an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees.
Other possible triggers include:
- Influenza virus
- Epstein-Barr virus
- HIV
- Mycoplasma pneumonia
- Hodgkin's lymphoma
- Incidences from immunizations or other vaccines or recent surgery are considered to be less frequent triggers.
